How is it that if we are presented with a man who is wearing white lab coat, we immediately associate him with a legitimate/ high degree responsiblity. How many times did we get duped in believing that these representatives displayed on TV were really what they pretended to be. It is so fascinating to see how easily we are manipulated into creating images and stereotypes that stay with us for the rest of our days. What is even more ridiculous is the fact that, we, the audience are aware of the bombardments of created images and slogans that shape our views and values but we still find ourselves engulfed into these dillusionary realities.
Understanding the process of producer and receiver and encoding and decoding the message is important, as this brings me to discuss how documentaries came along. The process is fairly simple, basically the producer sends a message which is encoded, then the message enters a phase of transmission in which it could have an adjustment, and finally the message is sent to the receiver who decodes the message. In the traditional Hollywoodien industry, there is only one way in this process of communication. However, if we take a look at the documentaries genre, we are allowing the subjects partaking in the process to shape the end result.
However, this genre of film also coined (February 8, 1926) as documentary by John Grierson is defined by many as factual film- or "life as it is". Others further state that a documentary stands out from the other types of non-fiction films for providing an opinion, and a specific message, along with the facts it presents. Thus, a documentary mainly centers around documenting some aspect of reality, primarily for the purpose of instruction or maintaining a historical record. It is also important to note that there are several different documentary genres that have developed after the 1920's.
